Cox Communications of Middle Georgia Earns Business Partner Award for Literacy Partnership with Macon Goodwill

More Than 350 First-Graders Benefit from Cox Good Book Reading Adventure

June 30, 2008

Rockville, MD – More than 350 first-graders in Bibb County, GA, discovered the joy of reading last year through the Cox Good Books Reading Adventure, a partnership between Cox Communications of Middle Georgia and Goodwill Industries® of Middle Georgia and the CSRA (Macon). This innovative partnership, as well as long-time financial and in-kind support, has earned Cox Communications the 2008 Business Partner Award from Goodwill Industries International®.

Cox Communications underwrites bus transportation to and from area schools to Goodwill’s Good Books CafĂ©, a snack for each child, a new backpack and a book for each student to take home. The company also provides volunteers to teach the children about healthy nutrition and Internet safety as part of the field trips.

In the 2006-2007 school year, 350 students from five Bibb County public schools benefited from the program. In 2007, the number of schools served increased to eight, and the goal of the program is to eventually reach more than 600 students at 26 elementary schools each year.

“Community partners like Cox Communications of Middle Georgia are essential to the health of youth, families and whole communities,” says Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Because literacy is one of the most important indicators of a child’s future success, Goodwill is especially pleased to honor this company’s steadfast support of an innovative reading program that reaches so many deserving children.”

Cox Communications has been a long-time supporter of the Macon Goodwill providing $15,000 for its 2002 capital campaign, free Internet for the entire facility, sponsorship of job fairs and various fundraising events, and in-kind advertising.

The Business Partner Award is given to a business organization that has invested significant resources into building the capacity of member Goodwill organizations across a wide geographic area. By recognizing creative, collaborative efforts between business partners and Goodwill agencies, this award seeks to help Goodwills increase their capacity for partnerships with local and national businesses.
